Workshop One - Location 06-03-12
Belinda Pratten Week Four Semester One
·
Exposure –
total amount of light used to create an image
·
Controlled by Shutter Speed + Aperture Other
factors are lighting conditions, subject matter, ISO, personal preference for
the image.
·
How do you choose your exposure
In camera light meter
Hand held light meter
Experience
histogram
an in camera exposure meter is read through the les (TTL) it considers filters and light coming in through the lens’ light transmission

·
ISO
·
The higher the ISO the higher the light sensitivity
·
The lower the ISO the lower the light sensitivity
·
DIN European for ISO
·
ASA American for ISO
·
ISO International Standards Organisation (1987)
·
Film sensitivity is fixed
·
ISO 400 film is twice as light sensitive as ISO
200
·
ISO 400
requires half as much light to produce a given result compared to ISO 200
·
Why have different ISO?
·
Action shots should have an increased ISO to
freeze movement
·
Still portraiture or commercial work should have
a low ISO to obtain quality
·
Night time shots should use a high ISO to get
most light
·
Digital Camera uses a sensor to convert light
into an electronic signal
·
High ISO means more noise (grain when referring
to film) due to image degradation
·
Always use the lowest ISO possible
·
In low light use a sow shutter speed and have a
wide lens aperture
·
In high light use a fast shutter speed and have
a smaller lens aperture
·
In camera exposure is reflected light matter
·
The inbuilt camera meter renders mid tones
·
The camera meter will under expose a light scene
(whites)
·
The camera meter will over expose a dark scene
(darks)
·
Camera meter
Modes
·
Average – in camera exposure meter is evaluated
on average
·
Evaluative – in camera exposure meter is based
on data base
·
Centre - in camera exposure meter majority is
centre measurement
·
Spot - in camera exposure meter majority of
measurement is in a small spot
·
Modes
·
TV – shutter speed priority you choose shutter
speed the rest is worked out by the in camera exposure meter
·
Program – camera chooses both aperture and
shutter speed
·
AV – you choose aperture the rest is worked out
by the in camera exposure meter
·
M – you choose all controls manually
·
All in camera meters try to render the scenes to
a mid tone
·
Mid tone scene will turn out appropriately exposed
·
Dark scene will turn out over exposed
·
Light scene will turn out under exposed
·
To correct this you will have to over or under
expose your shot by 1-2.5 stops
·
Midtones
·
in camera exposure meter renders midtones so
·
light skin - +1 stop
·
white paint - +1/1.5 stops
·
white snow - +2/2.5 stops
·
detailed shadows - -2 stops
·

Task
This shot taken at f.7 at 1/250 and with a shutter speed of 100 is under exposed for the purpose of the exercise
This shot taken at f.7 at 1/60 and with a shutter speed of 400 consisted of mostly blacks and i exposed it correctly for this exercise

This shot taken at f.5.6 at 1/100 and with a shutter speed of 100 consisted of mostly midtones and i exposed it correctly for this exercise

Rachel. Some really lovely work. You have a very good natural eye for photography. Be very careful with post production. Good you are having a go at it, but take care with too much vignetting and contrast. Belinda
